All About Pecans

Pecan pie - one of the specialties of the Southern United States! The base for this dish is actually one of the most recently domesticated crops and is native to North America. These shrivelled little nuts grow on the pecan tree and are encased in a hard green shell that looks a lot like macadamia nuts, but more long and less round. Pecans are packed with a wide variety of nutrients, such as Vitamins A and E, as well as potassium and phosphorus. Pecans are especially helpful for those trying to lose weight, as they are very filling and can help curb your appetite and can even help reduce the risk of certain types of cancer. The skin of the pecan can be a little bitter, with inside being more sweet and buttery. Because of this, it is very popular in baking, but can also be found in other kinds of dishes.

How to Use Pecans

Other than in sweet pecan pie, chopped pecans are commonly found in sweet breads and muffins. They are also oftentimes eaten toasted on their own and give a satisfying crunch. This crunch also makes them incredibly popular as a topper in all kinds of salads.
