All About Walnuts
Walnuts are a fan favourite nut – they’re great for both raw snacking and cooking and are a perfect addition to a wide variety of dishes. Plus, they’re fun to break open! The two major varieties of walnuts are native to Eastern North America and Iran, and most of the world’s supply of walnuts are grown in the United States. These wrinkly little nuts are also one of the healthiest nuts out there! They are packed full of omega-3 polyunsaturated fat, which is infamously hard to find in many foods. This type of fat is essential for reducing inflammation that could cause damage to the heart and blood vessels, therefore decreasing the risk of heart disease, heart attacks, and strokes. Omega-3 polyunsaturated fat has also been linked to increased mood and can even help alleviate the depressive symptoms of some mood disorders. The skin of a walnut has a slightly bitter taste, but the overall flavour is more earthy. Chances are, if you’re imagining what a “nut” tastes like, it’s something pretty close to the flavour of a walnut.
How to Use Walnuts
While roasted walnuts are delicious on their own, they are also perfect for cooking and baking. They are a wonderful addition to sweet dishes, such as fruit bread, and are a classic topper on a variety of salads. They are also a fantastic addition for sweet, roasted vegetables like squash and carrots.
