All About Almonds
Butter, flour, milk, chopped, whole – it seems like there are millions of ways that we can use almonds! Almonds came to us thousands of years ago and were first domesticated in the Middle East in what is now Iran. They are rich in Vitamin E and manganese, and a diet that regularly incorporates these super nuts can help reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes. Much like many of the other edible nuts out there, they are also rich in protein and healthy fats. With a relatively mild flavour and uniquely dry and crunchy texture, almonds are perfect for adding a little variety to pretty much any meal. Don’t freak out when you see almonds thrown into a dish where you wouldn’t otherwise expect them – you’d be surprised just how well they work with most flavours!
How To Use Almonds
Because of their mild flavour, almonds can be found in some variation for pretty much every dish out there. Most of the time, you’ll find them thrown into trail mix, as a salad topper, or as a garnish on some of your favourite pastries and sweets. While they work well with all kinds of flavours, they’re usually paired best with something sweet, especially dried fruits. Or just eat them whole and raw – the possibilities are endless!
Quick Almond Recipe:
How to Make Almond Milk
Try making your own regular or activated almond milk. Just soak almond over night for regular almond milk, or to activate, remove from the water after soaking, and leave on the sink in the strainer for an additional 8 to 12 hours to activate your almonds.
Store the soaked almond the fridge or dry to use later.
Then add 50g almond to a litre of water and blend very well. For a touch of natural sweetness try adding 2 dried dates when blending. Stain the blended Almond milk through a cheese clothes or nut milk bag and use or store in your refrigerator for up to a week. Be sure to use the left over nut pulp in other recipes. Just toss into muffins, biscuit or your Meatless Meat-Balls
Almonds are great as a snacks, in your favourite muesli, in baking or added to many recipes from around the world.
Healthy Almond Recipe Ideas
Keto Rolls
Low carbohydrate diets exclude grain breads and sugars. I find it hard to live without bread. Lunch of just a simple salad just does not cut it for me. It leaves me feeling like I have missed out. I love a sandwich that get me through the afternoon or a juicy hamburger loaded with fried onions and salad.
Meatless Meatballs
There is a deep savouriness of well browned mushrooms that lifts these meatless meatballs to new flavour heights with the parsley, spices and the richness of nutritional yeast. The texture of the paleo breadcrumbs and pea protein flakes round these out perfectly.
